The iron feels hot.
The rose doesn’t smell much.

这样的系动词有become,grow,get,turn,fall,go和come等。
The leaf will turn yellow in autumn.
The teacher became angry.

Our supplies of sugar and rice fell short.
The jokes fell flat.
The book was old and soon fell apart.

go mad 变疯了
go bad 坏掉了
go wrong 出错了

Hope your dreams will come true.
The dream has come true.
come right 纠正了,正确了

He has fallen into the habit of doing morning exercises to stay healthy.

He never stays angry for long.

You may rest assured that he will come to the party.

The weather continued fine for several days.
He held silent for the whole day.

He arrived in the U.S. a penniless 21-year-old.
首先,介词短语in the U.S. 可以把这个句子改写成:“He was a penniless 21-year-old when he arrived in the U.S.”。

It lived the life of and died a prairie chicken.
这个句子原本的结构是“It lived the life of a prairie chicken and died a prairie chicken.”。名词短语a prairie chicken同时充当两个谓语部分 lived the life of和died的成分。 其实,这里的die相当于一个系动词,其后面的名词短语a prairie chicken是用来补充说明主语的,也就是说是主语补足语,可以将其改写成:“It was a prairie chicken when it died.

1) Jane Austin died a spinster.
2) He died a hero’s death.
在例句1)中,a spinster作表语或者说是主语补足语,即补充说明主语Jane Austin的性质特征,所以可以将原句改写成“Jane Austin was a spinster when she died.”。
但在例句2)中,a hero’s death则不具有a spinster这样的特点,即并不是充当表语来修饰主语he,因为“He was a hero’s death when he died. *”,而要说“He killed the girl.”。

其他可以带同源宾语的不及物动词有live(如“He lived a dog’s life.”),dream(如“He dreamt a beautiful dream.”)

1) Lei Feng died young.
2) Lei Feng worked hard.
在例句1)中,young是形容词,作表语(或者说是主语补足语),说明主语Lei Feng的性质特征,所以可将原句改写成“Lei Feng was young when he died.”。
所以,不能将这句话改写成:“Lei Feng is hard when he works. *”。

He died a local company manager.
这句话相当于“He was a local company manager when he died.”。

1) Don’t act stupid.
2) Don’t act stupidly.
在例句1)中,act是作系动词,表示to appear or seem to be,所以这个act不是讲行为动作,而只是讲故意装出某种样子。

1) I acted foolish.
2) I’m ashamed I acted foolishly.

He acted quickly and seized the thief.

All the audience sat silent.
这里的silent是说明主语all the audience的特征,而不是修饰sat,故不用silently。
He was born poor.
The boy blushed scarlet.
I married young.
这里的young是说明主语I的特征,而不是修饰married,所以这句话可以改写成“I was young when I married.”。

Vitamins are organic compounds.
Vitamins are organic compounds necessary for the normal growth of life.
这里我们添加了一个形容词短语necessary for the normal growth of life,将其后置修饰名词compounds。
Vitamins are organic compounds necessary for the normal growth and maintenance of life of animals, including man.
这里的形容词短语是necessary for the normal growth and maintenance of life of animals, including man,依然将其后置修饰名词compounds。
Vitamins are organic compounds necessary in small amounts in the diet for the normal growth and maintenance of life of animals, including man.
这里是在necessary和for之间添加了介词短语in small amounts in the diet,整个形容词短语是 necessary in small amounts in the diet for the normal growth and maintenance of life of animals, including man,依然将其后置修饰名词compounds。

The egg hatched.
The little eagle grew up.
It clucked and cackled.

An eagle’s egg(主语)was placed(谓语)in the nest of a prairie chicken(地点状语).

It scratched in the dirt for seeds.
It(主语)scratched(谓语)in the dirt(地点状语)for seeds(目的状语).

This trend began during the Second World War.
介词短语during the Second World War作时间状语。
This trend began during the Second World War, when several governments came to the conclusion.
这里加了一个定语从句when several governments came to the conclusion,来修饰时间the Second World War。
This trend began during the Second World War, when several governments came to the conclusion that the specific demands cannot generally be foreseen in detail.
这里添加了一个同位语从句that the specific demands cannot generally be foreseen in detail,补充说明conclusion。这个同位语从句也是一个“主语+谓语”的句型,这里的主语是the specific demands,谓语是一个被动结构cannot generally be foreseen,介词短语in detail作状语。
This trend began during the Second World War, when several governments came to the conclusion that the specific demands that a government wants to make of its scientific establishment cannot generally be foreseen in detail.
这里添加了一个定语从句that a government wants to make of its scientific establishment,来修饰the specific demands。这个定语从句是一个“主语+谓语+宾语”的句型,主语是a government,谓语是wants,宾语是to make of its scientific establishment。

But the not-so-easy way may mean getting down on your hands and knees and pulling out the weeds by the roots.
They are looking for one-minute solutions to everything.
Just like instant coffee, they want instant happiness.
There are no quick fixes. This attitude leads to disappointment or even failure.

The emphasis helped to obscure the great importance.
该句的主语是the emphasis,谓语是helped,宾语是不定式短语to obscure the great importance。
The emphasis given by both scholars and statesmen helped to obscure the great importance.
这里是在主语emphasis后面添加了一个分词短语given by both scholars and statesmen,作后置定语,表明是谁在强调。
The emphasis given by both scholars and statesmen to the presumed disappearance of the American frontier helped to obscure the great importance.
介词短语to the presumed disappearance of the American frontier是补充说明主语emphasis的,表明强调的内容是什么。
The emphasis given by both scholars and statesmen to the presumed disappearance of the American frontier helped to obscure the great importance of changes in the conditions and consequences of international trade.
这里在importance后面添加了介词短语of changes in the conditions and consequences of international trade,作后置定语。这里还要搞清楚并列关系,不是changes in the conditions和consequences of international trade并列,而是conditions和consequences并列,然后介词短语of international trade修饰conditions and consequences,表示“国际贸易的条件和后果”。
最后整个介词短语in the conditions and consequences of international trade修饰changes,表示在哪方面发生的变化,即“在国际贸易的条件和后果两方面发生的变化”。
The emphasis given by both scholars and statesmen to the presumed disappearance of the American frontier helped to obscure the great importance of changes in the conditions and consequences of international trade that occurred during the second half of the nineteenth century.
这里在international trade后面添加了定语从句that occurred during the second half of the nineteenth century,作后置定语。
综上所述,这个复杂的句子其实就是一个“主语+谓语+宾语”的句型,即the emphasis…helped to obscure the great importance…。

He showed the guard(间接宾语)his passport(直接宾语).
比如上面这个句子可以改写成“He showed his passport to the guard.”。
I am going to buy her a gift.=I am going to buy a gift for her.

这样的动词有:assign,award,bring, deliver,deny,feed,give,grant,hand,lend,offer,owe,pass, pay,promise,post,read,recommend,sell,send,show,take和write 等等。
这样的动词有:book (预订),buy,build,change,choose,cook, fetch,find,get,keep,make,order,prepare和sing等等。
I’ll bet you ten dollars.
The repairman charged me ten dollars.
Can I ask you a question?=Can I ask a question of you?
I have a question to ask of you.
I have a big favor to ask of you.

Her work won her the Nobel Prize in 1983.
Her work in genetics won United States scientist Barbara McClintock the Nobel Prize in 1983.

常见的带复合宾语的动词有:appoint,believe,call,choose, consider,declare,elect,feel,find,keep,leave,let,make,name, nominate,prove,see,suppose和vote等等。
I very much hope that this new medium will make my Christmas message more personal and direct.
从句中的宾语是my Christmas message,宾语补足语是more personal and direct。

A hedge (树篱) between keeps friendship green.

They appointed John chairman.

I believe him to be true.
该句的宾语是him,宾语补足语是to be true。

The chairman declared the meeting over.

1) I made John our chairman.
2) I made John a cake.
在例句1)中,在宾语John后面添加is,即“John is our chairman.”。
而在例句2)中,在宾语John后面添加is,即“John is a cake.* (约翰是一块蛋糕。)”。

1) She will make him a good husband.
2) She will make him a good wife.
在例句1)中,在宾语him后面加上 is,即“He is a good husband.”。
而在例句2)中,在宾语him后面加上is,即“He is a good wife.* (他是一个好妻子。)”。 实际上它是补充说明主语she的,应该算作主语补足语,例句2)可以改写为“She will make a good wife for him.”。
在例句1) 中,make是大家熟悉的使役动词,英文解释是to cause to be or become,表示“使……

Willa Cather considered this novel her best work.
Willa Cather considered her novel of life in nineteenth-century Nebraska, My Antonia her best work.
这句话的宾语较长,是her novel of life in nineteenth- century Nebraska, My Antonia,其中My Antonia是小说的名字,与名词短语her novel of life in nineteenth-century Nebraska构成同位语。宾语补足语是her best work。
